Up to 20 inches of snow fell in parts of Kalkaska Co.
KALKASKA, MI -- "If they say Kalkaska’s getting seven inches, we're getting 19 out here," said Randy Jonker, a Kalkaska resident.
Kalkaska County was one of the snow belts hammered with snow.
Some people woke up to close to two feet of the white stuff.
Kalkaska Schools were closed today and several people spent the day digging out.
“This is my redneck, red truck, measuring unit, this is what we use to measure the snow fall," explained Jonker.
Randy Jonker says he lives in the belt-buckle of the Snowbelt, near Manistee Lake in Kalkaska. His truck is under repair, but he's still using it, with the help of a measuring stick.
"Right now we have 16 inches on the hood of the truck, and that's of last night," said Jonker.
Down the road, the assembly of snow flakes on this car was a lot to handle, probably too much for an ice scraper.
“Just take your shovel, it comes off a lot easier."
School was cancelled in Kalkaska, some kids were playing.
“We've been trying to make a fort, but it's not going too good," explained a group of girls.
And some kids were working, trying to put a dent into the huge snow accumulation before the parents get home.
"I have to snow blow my whole yard, and then I have to shovel my roof," said Harley Day, a Kalkaska resident.
And with the huge snow, Ray Osak says getting it off the roof is important.
"This is a 21 foot pole, and I still can't reach the peak," said Ray Osak, a Kalkaska resident.
For the guys with a plow on their truck, like Michael Roscamp:
“Whenever the weathercasters call for snow, we're like, yeah, we're going to get it," he said.
White flakes translate into green.
"With four wheel drive you can plow into it and get out, but other than that, it's tough," said Rick Osborne, a mail carrier.
For those on the roads like mail carriers, it just takes a little more time.
“I told them I'm delivering everybody's, I'm not bringing none back," said Osborne.
“If they say Kalkaska's getting seven inches, we're getting 19 out here," said Jonker.
“Don't you wish you had a four-wheel drive?" laughed Roscamp.
They all say, bring on the snow!
