Sheriff Dale Clarmont said his deputies were called to a vehicle that went through the ice on Burt Lake off of Hoppies Restaurant in Burt Township January 6, 2011 at 5:45 pm.  Investigation revealed John Wallace 35  from Lake Mi was driving his 2001 Ford Ranger pickup back to the boat launch at the end of Mullett-Burt Rd.  He was approximately 300 yards out when the ice gave way and the vehicle went to the bottom 15 feet down.  John Wallace and his passenger Brian Wallace 25 YOA from Cheboygan were out fishing for the afternoon and coming back in to shore.  Both were able to get out of the vehicle with no injures. Due to the ice conditions the vehicle could not be retrieved.  A fir tree has been placed at the site to mark it. The matter has been turned over to the Michigan DNR.   Sheriff Clarmont is again advising those who venture onto the ice to take precautions and know the conditions.
