KALKASKA, MI -- The Village of Kalkaska is hosting a New Economy workshop on Thursday, January 27, 2011, 6:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. at the Kalkaska Village offices. The workshop will give citizens an opportunity to learn how best to position the Village to take advantage of its existing assets, and how to develop new opportunities in this changing economic climate. The Northwest Michigan Council of Governments is partnering with Kalkaska Village to hold the workshop.

Presenters will discuss Michigan’s current economic climate, and how state, regional, and local assets can become the foundation for a new economy. The discussion will focus on economic data specific to Kalkaska County and Village in relation to New Economy concepts and the master plan process.

The Village of Kalkaska is creating a new Master Plan to prepare the community for changing needs and to allow for informed decisions about transportation, housing, infrastructure, recreation, land use, the economy, and overall quality of life.

As part of the planning process, the Village is taking a close look at changing economic conditions that have moved the state from a traditional manufacturing-based economy towards a new paradigm in which economic growth and investment is:

  • Entrepreneurial

  • Globally connected

  • Knowledge-based

  • Collaborative and networked

Workshop content was developed for the Michigan Land Policy Institute’s Michigan Prosperity Initiative, and will be presented by MSU Extension and staff from Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. Planning commissioners, elected officials, and anyone who is interested in economic growth and development in Kalkaska are invited to attend.

There is no cost to attend the workshop but registration is required. Please register by calling Sarah Lucas, Regional Planner, Northwest Michigan Council of Governments at 231-929-5034.
