TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- The film "For Once in My Life," from the popular PBS series "Independent Lens," will be presented free and open to the public on Thursday, January 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dennos Museum on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. The "Community Cinema" series in Traverse City is a collaborative effort of CMU Public Television and The Dennos Museum.
Made up of 28 musicians and singers who all have severe mental and physical disabilities, the 'Spirit of Goodwill Band' is a raucous home-away-from-home where members are free to display their talent, humor, and tenacity. The film "For Once In My Life" challenges preconceived notions of what it means to be disabled.
Refreshments and resource/discussion guides are provided for attendees. Following the one-hour film, a panel of local residents will share comments and participate in a discussion with the audience.
"Community Cinema has become a real success story for WCMU and the Dennos," said Linda Dielman, Program/Outreach manager for CMU Public Television. "Each month the audience consists of 100-150 interested Traverse area residents who enjoy these outstanding independently-produced films and are anxious to engage the panelists in lively discussions. WCMU is pleased to bring the monthly screenings to Northern Michigan."
This event is part of the "ITVS Community Cinema" (Independent Television Service) program. For more on the Community Cinema series, visit WCMU's website, www.wcmu.org.
