Increased New Year's Eve patrols
CADILLAC -- You hear the warning every New Year's Eve: Don't drink and drive! Police say not everybody listens to their pleas. Last year approximately 300 people were arrested for drunk driving statewide on the holiday.
The Michigan State Police post in Cadillac will have increased drunk driving patrols tonight and for throughout the weekend.
In Michigan it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher. People caught drunk behind the wheel could face up to 93 days in jail, a $500 fine, 360 hours of community service, 180 days driving suspension, and six points on their license. Those who are convicted under the state's new "Super Drunk" law could face an even harsher punishment.
