CHARLEVOIX, MI -- Recreation is important to communities, but it isn't always cheap to maintain.

In Charlevoix, the city-maintained ski hill hasn't been a money-maker, but this year, they're hoping public input has helped steer them in an upwards direction.

The Director of Parks and Recreation talks about the importance of Charlevoix skiing and how they hope to bring in more revenue this year.

Mt. McSauba in Charlevoix isn't the biggest hill, but gives one heck of a view of Lake Michigan and the Michigan shoreline.  Mt. McSauba has been a staple for the Charlevoix community, and continues to be today.

"Everybody from the city council, the city manager, down is on the same wavelength, it's great," said Mt. McSauba General Manager Bo Boss.

"I love it here, like, I can't go places every day, so I love it here, it's like my home here, it's another home," said Sarah Martin, a snowboarder at the hill.

"It gets you ready for other bigger hills," said Katherine Ryan, a snowboarder.

Teresa Hart recently took over as the Director of Parks and Recreation for Charlevoix.  She says it's tough to maintain and sustain Mt. McSauba money-wise.

"There are so many operating expenses that go into the operation of the ski hill," said Hart.

But this year, in hopes to make Mt. McSauba a little more profitable, they're trying new techniques.

"We’re just really listening and keeping an ear to what is needed, as opposed to keep doing what we were doing and expecting results," said Hart.

Opening during more peak hours is one thing she's heard could help.  The hill will be open Friday and Saturday nights.  They've also worked on the schedules for ski lessons, making it possible for more beginners to get a chance to learn.  And with affordable prices and new activities like cross-country skiing and snow shoeing, Hart says the hill is making itself more of a family-oriented destination, and a place for kids to hang out.

“I've always been a firm believer in the fact that sports keep kids out of courts," said Hart.

"There’s nothing better than to come here and see it and enjoy the great outdoors," said Zach Ryan, a snowboarder.

Teresa Hart hopes other communities will utilize Mount Mcsauba.

This year, Charlevoix Parks and Recreation will also build a disc golf course for summer recreation at the hill.
