Mike Jones is well known in Panama City as "Salvage Santa" for his work providing Christmas gifts for needy children. He was in the building Tuesday when a gunman interrupted a school board meeting and threatened to kill its members.

Jones said he was supposed to be on vacation but instead was at the building to be available to answer some security questions during the meeting.

The retired detective said at a Panama City news conference Thursday that he wants to forget the showdown that resulted in gunman Clay Duke's death and get back to his charitable efforts helping the less fortunate.
