TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Nearly 40 one and two bedroom apartments are being built at the Grand Traverse Commons.
7&4's Kate Fox found out when the units will be ready for you to move in and how you can lease one.
The units are under construction right now and while they won't be finished until late next summer, you can apply to live in one of them now. One of the most exciting things about the new housing development it will cater to people who don't make a lot of money.
Common’s Developer Ray Minervini says, "It is dependent upon certain income thresholds that have to be met but roughly $20,0000 to $30,000 depending on if it's a single or a family that's how they determine qualification for housing."
Construction on the new project called the 630 Lofts is underway in Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons. The 39 units will be one or two bedrooms that range in price from $500-$700 a month.
Minervini says, "These rates are based upon meeting income requirements so it's not for those that are able to afford other kinds of housing it's really a way to make housing available for those that need it most."
He also says the units will be more than just a home with a beautiful view because the location creates even more opportunities.
Minervini explains, "Employment opportunities near by with Munson, the Pavilions, or the Village here we have almost 300 people that work here in the Village and a lot of those people would love to take advantage of more affordable housing."
He says this project fits the vision of the commons which promotes a mix of people and businesses. Minervini says, "Monocultures are less dynamic, less interesting and I don't think there as sustainable...unless you bring in a diversity of people and that's our philosophy from day one of this project."
The units will be ready by next august for people to start moving in.
