Staying fit during the holiday feasting frenzy
TRAVERSE CITY -- Here’s some food for thought, the average American consumes between four and six thousand calories on Thanksgiving Day. Turkey Day dinner is frequently the meal that sends people into a downward spiral of bad eating habits for the holidays, but there is something you can do to enjoy the feast and stay under control.
Diane Roach, a registered dietitian at Munson Medical Center says the biggest mistake people make on Thanksgiving is not eating anything before dinner. They think it will balance out the huge meal they’re planning to eat, but it doesn’t. She recommends eating a wholesome, light breakfast and lunch so your portions later are small.
Roach also recommends making the holiday get-togethers about more than just the food. Take a walk with a family member or play some cards. When it comes to the buffet, have a strategy.
Roach says, “Take a look at everything that's available and decide which things you want the most. Take one plate and take items you want. Use moderation. If you want five sugary items, just take a little bit.”
