Pak-Mail in Gaylord is collecting phones to send to military for the holidays
GAYLORD, MI -- You’ve heard the saying home is just a phone call away.
Pak-Mail in Gaylord and Cadillac are trying to make it easier for those serving in the military to get a hold of family during the holidays.
They're holding their annual Cellphones for Soldiers holiday drive.
If you have an old phone, you can drop it off at Pak-Mail, and they'll send it to a soldier who needs one.
It's a year-long collection, but this time of year, it's especially special.
"We do it all the time, we have signs in the window, it's amazing the phones you can get, people still bring in bag phones, you know, it's great, it's a nice thing to do," said Wayne Schreck, co-owner of Pak-Mail, Gaylord.
So far, Pak-Mail has collected more than 7,000 cell phones.
The phones are refurbished, and if they can't be refurbished, they're stripped and the copper is sold.
The phones are sent to troops with an hour calling card, so they can make the important call home.
