TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Every year, cigarette smoke is blamed for one of every five deaths in the United States.  That's more than 440,000 lives.

To get people to quit, ever year the American Cancer Society holds its Great American Smokeout.

They hope if smokers quit for just one day, they might be more inclined to quit for good.

Northwestern Michigan College is participating with several events taking place on Thursday.

The Director of Health Services at NMC, Renee Jacobsen, said, "We have students coming in by the dozens asking for help to quit smoking this year.  I think the smoke free campus is a catalyst for students that are interested in quitting and they're using this opportunity.  So we want to help them as much as we can."

Cancerous and diseased lungs will be on display at the NMC campus.  The college will also be offering a group session with a local hypnotherapist who specializes in smoking cessation.
