BAY CITY (AP) -- A 34-year-old Houghton Lake accountant accused of bilking clients out of tax return money has been sentenced to 51 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $1.1 million in restitution.

Robert DenBoer Jr. was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Thomas Ludington.

DenBoer previously pleaded guilty to single counts of willfully filing a false tax return and wire fraud. The charges stemmed from an 2004 IRS investigation.

Authorities say for more than three years DenBoer gave clients false tax returns showing smaller refunds, then diverted the difference to his personal accounts.

Records reviewed by The Bay City Times indicate DenBoer skmimmed nearly 760,000 from clients in a separate scam.

DenBoer must report to prison Jan. 2.
