MANISTEE -- Construction workers discovered a human jaw at the site of a new marina building in Manistee.

The bone was found Thursday afternoon on the ground at the site on River Street.  The area was covered with dirt that was excavated during construction.

The bone was examined by Dr. Barna the Manistee County Medical Examiner.  Dr. Brana believes with the preliminary examination the bone is from a child and possibly female. Further examination by a forensic anthropologist is necessary to provide more specific information.

At this time the immediate area around the find has been marked off for additional examination. The medical examiner will look over the site with a Manistee Police Detective and together will determine the next course of action.

The bone is weathered and appears to have been in the earth for a long time. There are no known open cases of missing children in the area however police will be checking data bases for any old cases. There is no known history at this site of it being used as a burial ground.

Friday crews will use ground penetrating radar to see if there are any more remains or if the area is a burial site.  Officials will also be sifting through the dirt to see if any other bones are there.
