LEELANAU COUNTY -- There was an impressive turn out at Leland High School Thursday morning as over 1,000 students filled the school's gym.

These students were ready to have their voices heard at the 25th mock election rally.

The gym was transformed into a rally where students gave speeches about US and State Senators.  These Candidates also took the stage to address the students and try to win their votes.

The mock election is all a part of an assignment for the student's government class.

Leland High School Junior Jared Ornelas says, "Not only does it stress the importance of voting, most government classes don't get to do anything like this, they just give information out of a text book...get tested on it and move on to the next chapter....but we get immersed into the campaign by doing volunteer time, interviews, just working with the candidates, it brings a whole new aspect."

After the rally students had an opportunity to sit down and meet the candidates.  Then they casted their votes. They even voted for governor.

These votes were counted and the students voted Virg Bernero as the next governor.
