The U.S. Coast Guard advises all Lake Michigan residents, recreational boaters and commercial mariners to be aware this week of gale winds in excess of 35 knots out of the southeast.

The Coast Guard advises that all recreational boaters remain in port and that commercial vessels should prepare for very strong winds and dangerous sea conditions and should also consider taking shelter in port until winds and waves subside.

"Any persons on the water should be aware of the potential hazardous conditions and refrain from recreating on the lake," said Cmdr. Jerry Davenport, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee.

The National Weather Service reports the gale force winds are expected to continue through Wednesday evening and could increase to 55 knots and waves could reach 15-20 feet in some portions of the lake.
