TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Traverse City planners have completed preliminary engineering plans for the south campus entrance near the Grand Traverse Commons.
Monday night, commissioners and community members gathered for an open study session about the proposed plans.
City Engineer Timothy Lodge said they used the adopted South Campus Entrance Design Plan, the Master Site Plans for the Historic Barns and the Grand Traverse Commons master plan as a basis for their preliminary design.
The proposal includes changing the width of the roadways and adding bike lanes.
The idea, officials say, is to calm traffic and increase pedestrian accessibility.
"The guiding principals that we were using were basically to create a special entry place to focus on pedestrian travel and preserving natural resources to reduce speed and create a network of streets,” said Traverse City Planning Director Russ Soyring.
City planners say the final design needs to be completed by January, allowing MDOT to facilitate construction next spring.
