Meet the Candidates
Michigan's 2nd Congressional District will have a new representative next year.
That district covers Benzie and Wexford Counties down through Holland.
Republican Pete Hoekstra holds the seat now. He ran for governor instead, but lost in the primary.
Five candidates are all vying to be the next congressman for the 2nd district.
Tonight we introduce you Republican Bill Huizenga and Democrat Fred Johnson.
There is also a fifth candidate for this race. Ron Graeser is running with the Constitution Party. He is currently working out of state and was unable to meet us for a taped interview. But he provided written answers to the same questions we asked all the candidates.
"How will you create jobs in Michigan?"
As a federal congressman I will attempt to repeal all federal laws that have been passed in violation of the U.S. Constitution's tenth amendment which states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution … are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Once the federal government is no longer regulating what it has no authority to regulate (with the concomitant expensive, business-killing rules, fines and prison terms) and no longer performs functions it has no authority to perform, the federal need for astronomical amounts of money will disappear. Then the government will no longer extract the suffocating taxes and enforce onerous regulations that kill economic activity in Michigan. Commerce and therefore job creation will flourish after these impediments are removed. Businessmen will create even more jobs when state laws and state taxation promote commerce.
"Besides job creation, what's another issue high on your agenda?"
The most fundamental, indeed the prime, reason for the existence of government is to protect innocent human life. Abortion is the deliberate killing of innocent human life. The capricious, callous endangerment of innocent human life in this country is its most serious problem. Nothing is safe or worth working for when innocent human life is up for grabs.
"Why should voters choose you over your opponent?"
Health care is a major concern and cost in America. Don't expect politicians, marketing specialists and lawyers to solve it. A physician knows health care from the ground up and has the best chance to optimize it, and I am a physician. With my background of 20 years military service, life-long patient care, and a deep seated desire to abide by our constitution I am your best choice to represent you in Congress.
"If you are elected, where do you see Michigan at the end of your term?"
Claiming that my two years in the federal congress would make a significant difference to Michigan would be arrogant and conceited.
Hopefully I can reduce the federal theft of Michiganders' resources, lessen federal laws that violate Michiganders' rights and ensure that Michiganders are safe from foreign enemies who are currently trying to destroy this nation's freedoms and, if possible, the nation itself.
