MACKINAC ISLAND -- As the Mackinac Island community gathers to discuss a dock purchase plan that could put a long time ferry service out of business, organizers of an annual sailboat race could change the course next year.
The ferryboat feud has led organizers of the annual sailboat race from Port Huron to Mackinac Island to consider moving the race off the island.
Bruce Burton of the Bayview Yacht Club said in a statement Tuesday organizers are worried that a proposed merger between Arnold Transit Co. and Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry would jeopardize the race.
The deal could force longtime race sponsor Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry out of business.
Shepler's has filed a federal lawsuit, claiming a city of Mackinac Island plan that would provide Arnold Transit Co. with a monopoly violates city ordinances and antitrust laws.
Mayor Margaret Doud said proposals from all three companies are being considered. Arnold Transit Co. said the suit is unjustified and premature.
The dock purchase plan will be discussed Wednesday afternoon at a public meeting.
Theh Mackinac Island ferry companies will read their proposals to the city council on how they think they should move forward with service.
The meeting is at 3 p.m. at City Hall on Mackinac Island. 7 & 4 News & UpNorthLive Tonight has a crew at the meeting and will bring you live updates on 7 & 4 News at 5 & 6 as well as UpNorthLive Tonight on ABC 29&8 at 6:30.
