TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City residents could soon get some help in funding the Senior Center.
Traverse City Commissioners passed a plan Monday night that they feel will make the Senior Center funding more fair.
The plan will merge the Senior Center with the County Commission on Aging. Mayor Chris Bzdok says in order to make sure residents in Traverse City aren't taxed twice, the city will lower the general tax.
"It's a fair common sense obvious step that the city commission needs to take so that its not increasing tax burden on city residents. city residents it will not cost them any more money because it will be lowered by the same amount," explained Mayor Bzdok.
Right now the city pays more than half of the Senior Center's bills, but only 23% of those who use the facility live in the city.
The mayor says passing the ballot proposal would make the Senior Center what it truly is, which is a regional asset.
The millage proposal will charge all Grand Traverse County taxpayers .1 mills, instead of just taxing Traverse City residents. A person whose home has a taxable value of $100,000 would pay $10 if the millage passes.
Voters will take up the millage on November 2.
