TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Commissioners will be voting Monday night on a plan that could lower taxes for residents.

There is a millage request on November's ballot that would merge the Senior Center with the County Commission on Aging.

If it passes, all taxpayers in Grand Traverse County would pay for the senior center -- not just Traverse City residents.

Mayor Chris Bzdok says in order to make sure residents in Traverse City aren't taxed twice, the city will lower the general tax and that's what they'll vote on Monday evening.

"It's a fair common sense obvious step that the city commission needs to take so that its not increasing tax burden on city residents. city residents it will not cost them any more money because it will be lowered by the same amount," explained Mayor Bzdok.

Right now the city pays more than half of the Senior Center's bills, but only 23% of those who use the facility live in the city.

The mayor says passing the ballot proposal would make the Senior Center what it truly is, which is a regional asset.

The Traverse City Commission meeting will begin at 7:00 PM Monday at the Governmental Center.
