DUNCAN BAY -- The Coast Guard has determined the source of the oil spill in Cheboygan County.
Last week, oil washed ashore and coated 300 yards of the Cheboygan State Park beach.
An additional 15 gallons of oil were found in a remote, protected part of shoreline in Cheboygan State Park this week.
The oil spill was cleaned up by the Coast Guard and other federal, state and local officials.
The U.S.C.G says they have successfully removed all recoverable oil, contaminated sand, and oiled rocks, and that the clean up process is complete.
Early samples of the oil were collected and after examination experts at the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Laboratory in Groton, CT, found that the oil from Tug William Hoey was the oil collected from the shoreline at Cheboygan State Park. The Marine Safety Laboratory is still investigating the case.
Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Captain Joseph McGuiness, said, "I am extremely pleased with the hard work, success, and talent of the responders from all the involved agencies. Cheboygan State Park officials' vigilance and awareness, expert advice from federal and state biologists, and cooperation from local municipalities was critical to this successful operation."
