LEELANAU COUNTY -- Deer hunters are helping feed families in need this fall.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment says last year hunters donated more than 23-thousand pounds of venison meat, enough to supply more than 100-thousand meals.
People can make cash donations directly to the Michigan Sportsman Against Hunger Program or hunters can donate a deer to one of the listed licensed meat processors such as Bunting's Cedar Market in Leelanau County.
"There are a lot of people out there that are in need for food, especially now with the economy the way it is. so if we can partake in the cause to be able to give people an opportunity to get food on their table, especially a main staple like meat- obviously that's exactly what we want to do," explained Roger Mikowski, Meat Manager at Buntings.
