LANSING (AP) -- A $5.8 million federal grant to the Michigan State Police will help fund 21 trooper jobs.

Michigan State Police announced the funding Thursday from the U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program.

The grant pays for salary and benefits for entry level officer positions over a three year period.

The Michigan State Police will be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year.
