President Obama is kicking off a daylong White House summit on community colleges Tuesday.

The president sees the two-year colleges as a resource pool where companies can find workers with increasingly specialized skills.

He's already announced a new program to expand college partnerships. But thanks to the recession, states strapped for cash have cut back their budgets. And Obama says GOP spending cuts would make things worse.

In today's meeting, which brings together educators and officials from across the country, Obama will say America needs its two-year colleges to up their game, and Washington needs to help.
