(AP) -- Michigan officials are reminding residents that some portions of the nation's new health care laws are taking effect.
The federal law adds some consumer protections and force insurers to meet new requirements starting Thursday.
Young adults can remain on their family's health plan until they turn 26.
Insurers are prohibited from denying coverage for children under the age of 19. Insurance companies are prohibited from excluding coverage for the pre-existing conditions of children.
Plans can't cancel coverage just because people get sick.
Lifetime and annual limits on coverage start to phase out. More changes are on tap in 2014.
