(AP) -- Thousands of volunteers in four Great Lakes states are expected to come together to remove thousands of pounds of trash from beaches this weekend.

This year Alliance for the Great Lakes is coordinating the event, called Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup Event.

Participants in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin will also collect data Saturday on the most prevalent sources of litter.

There were more than 5,600 volunteers last year, removing 18,100 pounds from 145 locations in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

More than 8,700 are anticipated this year.

Dates and times for the event may vary depending upon location.

Volunteers are encouraged to check the Alliance's web site for information.  For the site CLICK HERE.
