LUDINGTON -- The search for a man believed to have drowned in Lake Michigan is postponed due to high winds.

Anupam Bhattacharjee, a Detroit college student, was knocked off the north pier in Ludington by a wave around 12:45 p.m. Monday. Witnesses say waves ranged from 6 up to 10 feet.

The search for Bhattacharjee, was temporarily postponed Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. due to unsafe conditions created by high winds exceeding 40 mph.

Search efforts began Tuesday morning around 7:00 a.m. starting with a shoreline search.  A few hours later, the search continued on the water with assistance from the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office and Kent County Sheriff’s Office utilizing Side Scan Sonar equipment until conditions became too dangerous.

Shoreline searches will continue and the sonar searches will resume when conditions improve
