TRAVERSE CITY -- If you have driven through the Grand Traverse Commons lately, you may have noticed construction taking place where a new war memorial park is being built.
In July, the old Traverse City war memorial, located near Division Street, was torn down and moved to the commons. The headstones are not yet in place, but organizers hope to have them in place this fall when the new park opens.
“The main goal is to have it done so we can have Veterans Day ceremonies down here,” said George Champlin.
There is still a lot of work that needs done before November 11, but local companies are stepping up to the plate and donating their time and energy.
“There are about 6 or 7 different contractors that I have talked to that are volunteering their time and services to do this,” Champlin said.
The contractors have helped level the ground and will soon pour concrete and lay stones at the memorial.
More than $17,000 has been donated to help fund this project.
