BAY CITY (AP) -- Federal prosecutors have dropped a criminal complaint against a Colorado man accused of helping his father threaten Michigan congressman Bart Stupak over his vote on health-care legislation.

In June, David Hesch of Loveland, Colo., was charged with mailing a letter to Stupak that was written by Russell Hesch of West Branch, Mich. The letter threatened to paint the Mackinac Bridge with the Democrat's blood.

A criminal complaint is a temporary charge in federal court. It's common for the government to drop complaints but still pursue a case. In a court filing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara Colby Tanase says she needs more time to investigate as well as decide whether further prosecution is warranted.

David Hesch's attorney declined to comment Thursday.
