An oil company wants permission to improve structural support for its pipelines running under Lake Michigan in the Straits of Mackinac.

Enbridge Energy seeks a state permit to add more anchoring braces to twin oil pipelines between a point in Mackinac County in the Upper Peninsula and Emmet County in the Lower Peninsula.

The state said Wednesday the permit application has been put up for public notice. The company's application says the work is needed to "provide better overall pipeline integrity and safety" and that similar work was done in 2006.

A different Enbridge pipeline running near the Kalamazoo River leaked between 820,000 and more than 1 million gallons of oil near Marshall in late July. That pipeline runs from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario.
