BENZIE COUNTY -- Benzie County Sheriff Rory Heckman said he feels like justice was not served in a case involving Benzie County Commissioner Mary Pitcher.
During a traffic stop In June, Pitcher was arrested for allowing a suspended person to operate her vehicle, possession of an open container of alcohol and possession of Marijuana.
“We were told by the prosecutor handling this case from Wexford County that she would be pleading guilty to 2 counts…allowing a suspended person to drive a motor vehicle and open intoxicant,” Heckman said.
However, that was not the case. Today, under a plea agreement, Pitcher pled guilty to the open intoxicant charge. The other two charges were dropped.
The county commissioner received a couple hundred dollars in fines and no probation.
“I really question this…whether John Q. Public would have gotten this kind of deal. It is a sad day when something like this occurs,” Heckman said.
Pitcher claims she did not know the driver of the car had a suspended license when they were pulled over back in June. She also claimed the marijuana was not hers.
