NORTH MANITOU ISLAND -- Two groups have joined forces to get the word out about a preservation project on a Northern Michigan Island.

The Leelanau Historical Society and Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, worked together to bring 64 residents and seasonal visitors to North Manitou Island Tuesday.

They learned about current efforts to restore historic buildings on the island.   The key project they saw was the preservation of the Katie Shepherd Hotel that was built back in the 1890's.

"We're switching from primarily advocacy to primarily helping with fixing buildings, restoring buildings so that they don't fall apart because as you can see, the one in the background hard to your left, it fell down and it was just tragic and so we want to make sure this doesn't happen to anymore buildings that are on the historic list," explained David Watt, the project organizer.

The volunteer based project began last summer.   Building materials were donated by Cherry Republic but more help is still needed. To make a donation CLICK HERE.
