LANSING -- Ten days after voters headed to the polls we now know who the Republican nominee for the 1st Congressional District is.
Dr. Dan Benishek won the nomination over Sen. Jason Allen by fifteen votes. The Board of State Canvassers wrapped up its meeting Friday to certify the election results.
The final tally is 27,077 for Benishek; 27,062 for Allen.
Officials say this race is being called one of the closest in Michigan's history.
As for the Democrats, Gary McDowell is uncontested for the nomination.
The 1st Congressional District covers 31 counties, including the Upper Peninsula and the north and northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula.
The seat is currently held by Democrat Bart Stupak who announced earlier this year that he is retiring.
