The Republican nominee for the 1st Congressional District race should be announced Friday morning, ten days after voters headed to the polls.

The 1st Congressional District covers 31 counties, including the Upper Peninsula and the north and northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula.

Unofficial results on the Secretary of State's website show  Sen. Jason Allen losing to Dr. Dan Benishek by a single vote.

Certification was started immediately county by county.  The State Board of Canvassers was originally set to meet on August 23 to certify the results at which time a recount can be requested, but the Secretary of State's office tells 7 & 4 News the Board will now meet at 10:00 a.m. Friday.

The spokesperson for the Secretary of State's office said they are still finalizing returns, with one county still outstanding Thursday afternoon.

As for the Democrats, Gary McDowell is uncontested for the nomination.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Bart Stupak who announced earlier this year that he is retiring.
