Store Helps People In The Community

HOUGHTON LAKE, MI -- Some people live their lives helping others.

One woman in Houghton Lake has dedicated her life to making sure others can live.

7&4 has the story of Merry Felk, who wakes up every morning knowing she's doing the right thing.

“I think it's just a great service in our community, I really do," said Deborah Geisser.

"It's time to get to know her," said Lorraine Heupel.

Merry Felk wakes up, she goes to bed, but it's the time in between that defines the type of person she is.  She is the owner of this store, "Needy Not Greedy," her store and her story that defines a true human being.

"This was the way I was raised and people need to appreciate that there are people in need, there are homeless, and there are troops over there every day serving for us," said Felk.

Inside Needy Not Greedy, there's an old guitar, an ancient sewing machine, and a Nintendo 64 game system, things that would probably be at the bottom of a landfill if not in this store.

"People bring their unwanted items to Needy, Not Greedy, we put them in the store, try to sell them, try to give deals, whatever it takes, we pay all of our bills first, and then whatever we have left over, it's a 50/50 split, 50 towards the community, to help pay bills, 50 percent helps support troops, we send magic jack care packages," said Felk.

Merry says she doesn't cut herself a check and the store is strictly volunteer driven.  She doesn't do it for herself, rather, for people that need a helping hand.  Here are two ladies that have had her help.

"I think she's down to Earth, and she has a heart of gold.  Merry would giver her left arm if somebody needed it, she's not in it for profit, she's in it to help the community," said Geisser.

"She's full of life, you know, we love her, and we love the stuff that we find here," said Heupel.

One of the bigger items she's selling is this home on two lots in Lewiston.  The price tag- $7,000.  That money is going to go toward a land contract so she can apply for Governmental grants and loans to help more people.

She also is selling raffle tickets, the winner, gets to shave her head.

"I'm willing to give up my home, my hair, to be here," said Felk.

She says she also gives away items if somebody is in desperate need.

If you'd like to help out her cause, she says, just visit her store, where's a little bit of everything that you may need.
