Five airports in northern Michigan are getting more than two million dollars in grants for airport maintenance and improvements.
The funding was provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Alpena County Regional Airport received a grant of $494,000 to rehabilitate the airport’s apron, or ramp, and taxiways in order to maintain surface integrity.
Charlevoix Municipal Airport received a grant of $159,134 to conduct the second phase of a plan to evaluate current and future demands of the airport.
Delta County Airport in Escanaba received a grant of $104,500 for the next phase of construction on installing a 10 foot perimeter fence and to relocate precision approach path indicator control boxes to increase airport safety.
Houghton County Memorial Airport received a grant of $693,500 to relocate the airport access road in order to reduce congestion and enhance public safety.
Sawyer International Airport in Marquette received a grant of $610,790 to replace concrete slabs on runway 1/19 to improve the safety of aircraft operations and extend the life of the pavement.
This funding is provided to the FAA through the regular federal appropriations process and is awarded through competitive grants.
