Boaters Raise Money For Michigan Special Olympics

MACKINAW CITY/CHEBOYGAN -- A local group is boating down the Lake Huron coastline hoping to raise a boatload of money.

They're called the Water Warriors and their mission is a combination of their love for water-sports, and their desire to help others.

It's the 20th Annual Water Warriors Endurance Run.  The run starts in Mackinaw City, it'll work its way down the Lake Huron Coastline, and end up at Harsens Island.  The benefit?  Special Olympics!"

You've heard the saying that sometimes small things in life can mean the world to another.  Meet the Water Warriors---a group that's truly special.

For 20 years, these men and women have set aside a week to ride their jet skis or drive their yachts, but it's not just about having fun.  They're also doing it to put a special smile on the faces of plenty and to keep their dreams alive.

"There's nothing better when you see the water warriors and the athletes get together and interact, and get to know each other, and just go for a nice little ride," said Kimberly Purdy of Michigan Special Olympics.

The Water Warriors start in Mackinaw City and make the five day, more the 400 mile journey, down the Lake Huron Coastline to the destination, Harsens Island in the St. Clair River.  They stop at several cities on the coast to raise money, and more importantly, awareness, to Michigan Special Olympics.  I jumped on the ship from Mackinaw City to Cheboygan...and this is exactly why Nick Carene says he's been a part of this for 19 years.

"The smile on their face, they're always happy to see us, it's why I do it, that's the reason I do it, that, and give something back," said Carene.

"It's the coolest thing I've ever done," said Special Olympian Anna Schoolcraft.

"Helps the athletes out, tremendous," said Special Olympian Ailee Faggion.

To participate in the 400 mile journey, each rider must raise $1800.  Since its inception, more than $2 million has been raised for Special Olympics.
