ST. IGNACE (AP) -- Federal investigators say a private pilot made two aborted takeoff attempts from a northern Michigan airport before crashing immediately after a third try, killing himself and his three Israeli granddaughters.
The National Transportation Safety Board is probing the July 13 crash near Mackinac County Airport, north of St. Ignace.
The Chicago Tribune says the NTSB found the plane's wings rocked back and forth before it crashed 1,000 feet from the runway.
The crash killed 73-year-old Moshe Menora of Skokie, Ill.; 17-year-old Sara Klein, 16-year-old Rebecca Menora and 14-year-old Rachel Menora.
The pilot's 13-year-old Israeli grandson Yossi Menora is in serious condition at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
