150-300 gallons leaked from a semi on US 31

EMMET CO., MI -- If you headed north out of Petoskey on US 31 for work Tuesday morning, you know it took a little longer than usual.

Clean-up crews were cleaning up the diesel that spilled out of the gas tank of this truck.

The Resort Bear Creek Township Fire Chief tells 7 & 4 a piece of metal on the roadway punctured the saddle tank of this semi.

The puncture happened in Petoskey and it wasn't until three miles later the driver noticed the leak.

"There was roughly somewheres between 150 and 300 gallons leaked out of his tanks, we used roughly 150 bags of oil dry on the highway to do the cleanup.  At this point, it appears that the highway is pretty well cleaned up and safe as far as traffic is concerned," said Chief Al Welsheimer.

Statewide Environmental Services helped with the cleanup.

There was some diesel contamination in the soil, and the DEQ has been contacted.
