BOYNE CITY -- A historic building in Boyne City will soon get a make-over thanks to preservation grant.
The City of Boyne City was notified Wednesday that it had been awarded a Historic Preservation Fund Certified Local Government grant of $54,450 to help restore the Water Works (1910) Building at the intersection of Division and South Park Streets.
The grant is being provided to the City through the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.
The grant will be used to help restore the building and return it to public use. The building, first used in 1910, has not been actively used by the City since the 1980’s when its pumping systems were taken out of service. Plans call for this grant, combined with another grant of $285,800 received earlier this year for City wide water system improvements, to return the building back to active water system service as a booster station while making other space in it available for public restrooms and historical interpretation.
The Water Works building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August of 1998.
Boyne City is also working with local residents interested in preserving the Water Works building. They are currently working on fundraising efforts to help in the restoration efforts.
