ANN ARBOR (AP) -- The University of Michigan says it has received a record number of applications from prospective freshmen for a fourth straight year.

The university says Wednesday it received 31,599 applications for the upcoming 2010-11 academic year. That's up from 29,939 a year ago.

The university had offered admission to nearly 16,000 of this year's applicants as of June 1. The projected size of the incoming class is about 6,350 students. That's about 300 more than last year and would make 2010 the largest incoming class in the Ann Arbor university's history.

The university says it received 3,715 applications from minority students. That's an increase of 836 from a year ago.
