NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. prosecutors say a Jamaican gang leader whose supporters clashed violently with government security forces in the streets of a slum area in his homeland is appearing in a New York City court today.

Christopher Coke was flown from Jamaica under heavy security Thursday. He's to appear in federal court in Manhattan to face drug and gun trafficking charges.

Prosecutors say drug dealers in the U.S. regularly sent tribute payments to Coke in recognition of his leadership and assistance.

Clashes between Coke's supporters and Jamaican security forces left 76 people dead.

Coke says he's saddened by the deaths and hopes his departure from Jamaica will help the Caribbean nation heal. He says he'll be found innocent.
