Mackinaw City will see $500,000 in upgrades
MACKINAW CITY, MI -- Outdoor recreation is a major part of the Northern Michigan experience.
In the winter, snowmobilers come up, in the summer, bikers hit the paths.
Stimulus money will be used to upgrade trails used for this recreation.
The DNRE has allotted federal stimulus money to the trail-head in Mackinaw City.
A $500,000 project will pave 2.5 miles of trails in the village limits, and construct a pavilion area, restrooms, and showers for trail enthusiasts.
Mackinaw City officials say the upgrades will equal an economic boost.
"It's very important for the village, this is the north terminus of the central trail here in Michigan, it leads from Gaylord to Mackinaw City, also towards Alpena, towards Petoskey, so this is really a central point for snowmobilers and bikers that come into the community and launch out to different facilities across the state," said Village of Mackinaw City Manager Jeff Lawson.
Work begins this summer.
Lawson says the DNRE also plans to spend $400,000 to fix 150-miles of trails within the central trail system.
