NEWARK, NJ (AP) -- Authorities say two New Jersey men who allegedly intended to become jihadists and kill American troops are due in federal court in Newark today.

They were arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport yesterday before boarding flights on their way to Somalia by way of Egypt.

Federal authorities say 20-year-old Mohamed Mahmood Alessa and 24-year-old Carlos Eduardo Almonte are charged with conspiring to commit an act of international terrorism.

Teams of state and federal law enforcement agents who have been investigating Alessa and Almonte since 2006 took them into custody.
