CRAWFORD CO. -- Crews are still battling to contain the Meridian Boundary Wildfire in Crawford County.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment reports the fire is 95% contained and has burned 8,586 acres.

The fire has destroyed 12 homes, 6 homes are received some damage and 36 outbuildings are destroyed or damaged.  There are no injuries reported.

There are 30 people on scene of the fire from the DNRE as well as staff from the United States Forest Service (USFS).

The fire danger throughout the northern Lower Peninsula remains very high and is expected to continue through the holiday weekend.  While burn permits are not required for campfires, the DNRE and USFS ask that you be very cautious and make sure fires are completely out and not left unattended.

For more information on burn permits for other types of burning you can call 866-922-2876 or click on THIS LINK.

Firefighters are still working on the Meridian Boundary Fire and ask people not to travel on suppression lines.  If you are travelling in the area you are asked to drive slowly and with your lights on.
