A Maple City teenager is dead after he went under while swimming in a Grand Traverse County lake.

Rescue crews were called to Twin Lake at the Twin Lakes Camp in Long Lake Township around 8:22 p.m. Monday.  Witnesses say 17-year-old Nicholas Cooper was swimming across the lake when he started to call for help and went under the water.

Grand Traverse County Deputies, the Marine Division and Dive Team responded, along with the Michigan State Police and Long Lake Fire Department and EMS.

At approximately 8:58pm, Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office Divers were able to locate the victim in approximately 10 feet of water.  The victim was unresponsive and taken to Munson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:24pm.

This investigation is still open.
