GRAND TRAVERSE CO. -- The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office is releasing more details on the death investigation of a newborn baby.
The body was found by a group of teenagers Friday around 5:15 p.m. The body was located near a sidewalk outside a home on Gladewood in Garfield Township.
The teenager who first found the baby said it was in a bag and appeared to have severe burns on it’s skin.
“Everybody at the scene was upset. I’ve been here for 28 years, and I have responded to all of our major cases and this was a pretty horrific crime scene,” Grand Traverse County Capt. Tom Emerson Said.
Deputies did search the home and gathered some evidence, but are not saying if the person may have lived there, or may have known the homeowners.
“Currently we are looking for any community assistance in locating their mother. We are also concerned about her wellbeing. Obviously, a birth did occur and we don’t know what her condition may be,” Emerson said.
The search for the birth mother continues. Officials are awaiting autopsy results on the infant, which is taking place at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids.
