Letter Carriers help deliver food to pantries
Mail carriers did more than drop off and pick up letters and packages on Saturday. They also picked up donations you may have left behind at the mailbox.
The National Association of Letter Carriers is collecting non-perishable food for local food pantries. It's the U-S Postal Service's annual "Stamp Out Hunger" event. Organizers say one of the great things about it is that people can help without even leaving home. Letter carriers are picking up donations along their routes.
After those donations are collected at the doorstep, more than 100 volunteers are helping to sort out all of the food and make sure it's divided equally among the one dozen food pantries that are participating. Organizers say there are 250,000 people in need, just in a three county area of the Grand Traverse region.
"Stamp Out Hunger" is a one-day only food drive, but of course you can donate at any time. Local food pantries gladly accept donations year round.
