LANSING -- Michigan lawmakers are preparing to take what might be the last crack at resolving an impasse over a proposed public school employee retirement incentive package.

Negotiators from the Republican-led Senate and Democrat-run House are expected to try and reach a compromise on the proposal Thursday.

Senate Republicans say they have made their best and last offer to Democrats and they want the issue wrapped up Thursday.

Lawmakers had hoped to get a deal done last month. They say a final plan should be approved soon so eligible employees have time to retire and schools have time to plan staffing for the next academic year.

A sticking point in the negotiations has been how much to improve pension benefits for school employees who choose to retire this summer.
