KINCHELOE -- The Chippewa County Correctional Facility in Kincheloe is under lockdown Tuesday, after a prisoner, armed with several weapons, attacked staff members.
It happened Monday around 10:45 a.m. Officials say a level 4 prisoner armed with several weapons attempted to take an employee hostage in the facility’s East Programs Building.
Facility employees immediately responded to the incident and were able to control the prisoner. Eleven staff suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident, including ten who were treated at an outside medical care facility.
The prisoner, who is serving a life sentence, has been at Chippewa Correctional Facility since April 30, 2009. He is currently in segregation.
The Michigan State Police are on-site to conduct a detailed investigation.
